4 Signs You Need a Water Heater

The water heater is something that’s easy to take for granted—easy not to think about at all—until, suddenly, it stops working, and you’re left scrambling to get a new one installed before the next round of morning showers!

Of course, there are usually some warning signs that a water heater is about to give out, and that it may be time to install a new one. If you know the warning signs, you can act to replace your unit when needed, but before it gives out on you completely.

So when do you need to call our plumbers to ask about a new water heater installation? Here are four warning signs to watch out for.

  1. Water that comes out either dirty or lukewarm. If you run your tap and the water has a rusty hue to it, that’s likely a sign that the water heater has given out. Likewise, if you have to run the water for longer and longer periods before it turns warm, or if you start to experience a lot of suddenly cold showers, that’s also evidence of a water heater issue.
  2. Water pooling around the tank. Your water heater tank is obviously designed to hold water, but over time its lining can corrode and it can start to leak. If you spot puddles of water around your tank, it’s time for a new water heater.
  3. Foul smells around your water heater. Did you know that there are parts of your water heater literally designed to rust? Over time, these ion-catching components may start to deteriorate and give off a foul odor. If you notice a funky smell in your basement/garage/laundry room, it may be the water heater that’s to blame.
  4. Your water heater is past its warranty. Simply put, water heaters are not made to last forever. If yours has outlived its warranty, then it’s probably time to start considering a replacement. A water heater can last for up to 20 years, but often they last much less time—maybe 12-15 years. Once your unit gets advanced in years, you should be on the lookout for these other warning signs.

Of course, any strange happenings with your water heater call for some thought, and perhaps for a professional inspection. When you see the need for a new water heater, be sure to contact our Vancouver plumbing team!
