7 Ways to Stop Wasting Water

Why avoid wasting water? For one thing, it’s good for the planet. For another, it’s good for your water bills. Saving water saves money on your monthly water statement, and it can be done with just a few simple plumbing checks and lifestyle changes.

We’ll show you seven of our favourites.

How To Conserve Water

  1. Inspect your home for any leaks—and get them fixed. A dripping faucet, a leaking toilet—these things can waste countless litres of water over the course of a single day. Make sure you are vigilant about leaks, and repair any plumbing appliances that are causing water loss.
  2. Install water-saving plumbing fixtures. Shower head aerators, dual flush toilets, water-efficient dishwashers—all of these things can help you curb your daily water usage.
  3. Avoid running water while doing other things. Become more aware of your water habits. Avoid leaving the faucet on while you brush your teeth. Fill your sink with water before washing dishes, rather than running the water the whole time. Look for other ways where you can cut water use.
  4. Take shorter showers. Even cutting three or four minutes can make a big difference. Try it, and inspect your monthly water bills to see what kind of progress you make.
  5. Buy local, hardy plants for your lawn. Try to find plant life that can thrive with minimal watering.
  6. If you do have to water your lawn or your garden, do it in the cool of the evening or first thing in the morning. Try to avoid watering when the sun is high, and when a lot of that water will evaporate.
  7. Harvest rainwater. Use water from a rain barrel to irrigate your lawn and garden, to wash your car, etc.
