It’s one of the central points in your family life, and as such, a time might come when you want to invest in a new one—either a more functional sink or perhaps just a nicer looking one.

How Many Basins?

For example, you’ll have a lot of options with regard to the number and configuration of basins. Consider:

A large, single sink will mean you have to do some juggling as you try to use the sink for multiple tasks at once, but it can be really nice for washing a deep pan of vegetables or a really large pot.
Two different-sized basins offer greater ease with multitasking, but also more difficulty washing large dishes.
Two equal-sized basins will look nice and symmetrical, but may not make it any easier to clean up that one big pot or pan.
Having three basins will allow you to run the garburator separately, perhaps in the middle of the two main basins. Also, more space is needed for this sink installation.

What Shape for Your Sink?

You will also have some choices to make with regard to the shape of your sink.

• A farmhouse sink is basically one large, single basin—very functional, a clean and rustic look.
• A double farmhouse offers more multitasking utility, but it also sacrifices some of that vintage look.
• Curved sinks can offer a slinky, curvy, modern look—which may be your cup of tea, or it may not be.
• Having a built-in drainboard, meanwhile, can obviously make it easier to dry dishes, but it eats up more of your precious counter space, and may mean smaller basins.
