Help Choosing a New Toilet
Most homeowners eventually arrive at the moment when a new toilet is needed. A toilet is not meant to last forever, and eventually the wear and tear of everyday use catches up with it; toilets that have leaks or other major problems can sometimes be repaired, but more often than not replacement is the way to go. Moreover, a new toilet can provide greater water conservation, greater comfort, and more aesthetic appeal—so many homeowners choose to replace their toilets not because they have to but because they want to, whether as part of a full bathroom remodel or otherwise.
Whether you choose to install the toilet yourself or call our plumbers to help you, the first step is always picking the new toilet that best meets your needs. Not all toilets are the same, and as you might imagine there are several factors to consider—including:
- The height of the toilet. There are two basic heights for a toilet. There is a standard height, but also a so-called “comfort” height, which is usually a couple of inches taller than the standard. While the standard setting is best if you have young children at home, the comfort height is probably what you want to go with otherwise.
- Two-piece versus one-piece toilets. Most homes have two-piece toilets, in which the bowls and tanks are two distinct, separate units; what you might not know is that a more seamless one-piece unit is also available. This is largely a matter of aesthetics—of which one looks most appealing to you—though it’s worth mentioning that a one-piece unit is a bit easier to clean.
- The shape of the bowl. Toilets come with two basic bowl shapes—a round one, and a more elongated or oval-like one. Again, this is largely an aesthetic choice, though you will also want to think about the size and layout of your bathroom. Ensure that you have enough space to install an elongated bowl, and for use of it to be comfortable.
- Water conservation. There are more and more options out there for water conserving, low flow, and dual-flush toilets. Ask your plumber about the distinctions, and about which model might be right for you.
